Feng
Shui

Feng shui — literally "wind and water" — is the classical Chinese art of arranging the environment to harmonise with the invisible forces of nature. Practised for over 3,000 years, it is a complete system of spatial analysis rooted in Taoist philosophy.

What Is Classical Feng Shui?

Classical feng shui is distinct from the simplified, commercially adapted version widely sold in popular culture. The classical tradition draws on primary Chinese texts such as the Zangxing, Qingwu Jing, and the Flying Stars manuals, using compass readings, landform analysis, and time-period calculations to diagnose and improve the qi of a space.

At its foundation are two major schools: Form School (形法), which analyses physical terrain and building shapes; and Compass School (理气), which applies directional and time-based formulae. In practice, these schools are used together for a complete analysis of any property.

Six Foundations of Feng Shui

Qi (Energy)

The invisible life force that flows through all spaces. Feng shui practice is fundamentally about directing and enhancing the flow of beneficial qi.

阴阳

Yin and Yang

All phenomena exist on a spectrum between opposing but complementary forces. Balance between yin and yang is essential for harmony in any space.

五行

Five Elements

Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water — the five elemental forces that interact in productive and destructive cycles governing all material reality.

八卦

Bagua (Eight Trigrams)

The eight symbols derived from the I Ching that map cardinal and inter-cardinal directions, each governing specific life areas.

Form School

The study of landforms, mountains, waterways, and architectural shapes — reading the physical environment for its energetic qualities.

理气

Compass School

The mathematical and directional analysis of a space using the Luopan compass, flying stars, and the ba-zhai (eight-house) method.
