Fan Tai Sui 2027: Who Offends Tai Sui in the Goat Year and What to Do

Fan Tai Sui 2027 refers to the traditional idea that people born under certain zodiac signs “offend” the Grand Duke of the Year, Tai Sui 太岁 (Tài Suì), during the Fire Goat year 丁未 (Dīng Wèi). In 2027 the signs involved are the Goat itself, the Ox, the Rat and the Dog. The Ox is the direct clash, the Rat is in a harm relationship, and the Dog shares a punishment relationship with the Ox and Goat. This is a traditional framework for choosing where to be careful, not a forecast that anything bad will happen to you.

Every year in my practice, someone arrives with a screenshot of a zodiac list and a worried face. I always say the same thing first: please put the fear down. Fan Tai Sui is an old way of saying “this year’s energy is not lined up with yours, so move gently and prepare well”. It is advice about attitude and timing. The rest of this guide explains where Tai Sui sits in 2027, who is affected, which birth years are meant, how the Lichun boundary changes the answer for some people, and what many Malaysian families actually do.

What Fan Tai Sui 犯太岁 Means

Tai Sui is the star-spirit of the year, traditionally linked to the movement of Jupiter, which takes roughly twelve years to circle the sky. Classical texts treat each year’s Tai Sui as a senior official who governs the year. The idea is simple: you do not provoke a senior official, and you take care not to stand in his way.

犯太岁 (fàn Tài Suì) means “to offend Tai Sui”. The tradition recognises several ways this happens, all based on the relationship between your birth-year branch and the branch of the year. In 2027 the year branch is 未 (Wèi), the Goat, so the relationships to look at are:

  • 值太岁 (zhí Tài Suì), “sitting on Tai Sui”: your sign is the same as the year. In 2027, the Goat.
  • 冲太岁 (chōng Tài Suì), clash: your sign sits directly opposite. The Ox clashes with the Goat (丑未冲).
  • 刑太岁 (xíng Tài Suì), punishment: the 丑戌未 trio. The Ox and Dog are the signs involved with the Goat.
  • 害太岁 (hài Tài Suì), harm: the Rat is in a harm relationship with the Goat (子未害).

I have written about the four types in general terms in my Fan Tai Sui guide. Here I want to stay with the Goat year specifically, because the pattern is different from other years.

Where Tai Sui and Sui Po Sit in 2027

Tai Sui has a compass position as well as a zodiac one. In 2027 it sits in the South-Southwest, the sector of the Goat 未. Opposite it, in the North-Northeast, sits Sui Po 岁破 (Suì Pò), the “Year Breaker”, the sector of the Ox 丑. The traditional Three Killings 三煞 (Sān Shà) of the year fall in the West.

What do people do with this? The classical advice is mostly about restraint:

  • Avoid heavy renovation, drilling or ground-breaking in the Tai Sui and Sui Po sectors of the home, especially if you can schedule it for another year.
  • Where practical, avoid sleeping or sitting with your back directly to the Tai Sui direction.
  • Keep the Sui Po sector quiet and orderly rather than noisy and cluttered.

How a sector maps onto your actual house depends on the compass reading and floor plan, which is why I take a proper compass reading on site rather than guess from a picture. For the wider annual layout, including the Flying Stars, see my Feng Shui 2027 guide. Last year’s framing in my Tai Sui 2026 article is also useful for seeing how the position moves from year to year.

Who Offends Tai Sui in the Goat Year 2027

Here are the signs involved, with the most recent birth years in the twelve-year cycle. Always check the sign by your exact date of birth (more on that below).

A few honest observations from my own reading of this table.

The Ox carries the most attention. It is both the clash and a member of the punishment group, so the Ox is the sign I ask to plan most carefully. Careful planning is not the same as expecting trouble. It means checking contracts twice, not rushing a big purchase, and looking after sleep and routine.

The Goat is “sitting on” Tai Sui. This is called 本命年 (běnmìngnián), the “birth-sign year”, and many Chinese families treat it with extra respect. A common custom is to wear something red throughout the year. The Goat year also tends to come with a sense of occasion, since the 12-year cycle brings you back to your own sign.

The Rat and the Dog are the lighter cases. Harm and punishment are treated as softer than a clash. In practice, I tell Rat and Dog clients that a few simple precautions are normally enough.

None of this means that a whole sign shares one fate. Millions of Goats, Oxen, Rats and Dogs will have perfectly ordinary years, and many will have excellent ones. A zodiac sign is one layer of your chart. Your full BaZi 八字 (bāzì) has four pillars, and the way they interact with 丁未 is far more specific. If you want a precise reading rather than a general one, a personal chart is the right tool, and you can start exploring on our BaZi page.

Signs Supported by the Goat Year

The tradition is not only about offence. Some signs are said to be supported by the year:

  • Rabbit and Pig form the Three Harmony 三合 (亥卯未) with the Goat. This is the strongest friendly relationship in the zodiac.
  • Horse forms the Six Combination 六合 (午未) with the Goat, a close and warm pairing.

I would not overstate this either. Being a Pig, Rabbit or Horse does not guarantee an easy year, any more than being an Ox guarantees a hard one. What it suggests is that the year’s character, which I read as warm, relational and consolidating, tends to feel more natural to these signs. For the general mood of the year, read my Year of the Goat 2027 predictions.

Which Birth Year Counts? The Lichun and CNY Boundary

This is where many people go wrong, and where a few of you will find your sign changes.

The zodiac sign in popular and temple practice usually follows the lunar year, which turns at Chinese New Year. In 2027 that is 6 February 2027, and the Goat lunar year runs until 25 January 2028. The sign used in BaZi, and by many feng shui practitioners, follows the solar year, which turns at Lichun 立春 (Lìchūn), on 4 February 2027 at 09:46 Malaysia time.

That leaves a gap of two days. It also means that if you were born in January or early February, your zodiac sign may be the previous year’s animal. For example, someone born in the middle of January 1985 belongs to the Rat year by the lunar calendar, not the Ox, even though the Gregorian year is 1985. For someone born between 4 and 6 February, practitioners differ, which is why I look at the exact birth time and date when it matters.

If you are not sure, work it out with the zodiac calculator, and read my notes on the turning of the year in the Lichun 2027 guide. If your birthday sits on the edge, treat both signs as worth reading rather than guessing.

What Malaysian Families Commonly Do

There is no single rulebook. Hokkien, Cantonese, Teochew and Hakka families, and different temples, follow somewhat different habits. These are the measures I see most often, and the reasons behind them.

Pray to Tai Sui at a temple in the first lunar month. Many families visit a Chinese temple after New Year to pay respects and ask for a smooth year. The first lunar month in 2027 runs from 6 February to 7 March. Some temples offer a formal 安太岁 (ān Tài Suì) ritual, in which your name and birth details are registered under Tai Sui for the year. Temples and communities differ on exact timing and procedure, so ask the temple what it offers.

A Tai Sui plaque or talisman. The term covers different things. At temples, a “Tai Sui plaque” is usually a name tablet or paper talisman registered for the year. At home, some families keep a small Tai Sui talisman 太岁符 (Tài Suì fú) or carry one in a wallet. I treat these as symbols of respect rather than as armour. If you choose one, get it from a temple or practitioner you trust, and ask for the prices upfront because they vary between places.

Wear red. A red bracelet, red underwear or a red item you carry daily is a very common choice, especially for the Goat. The reasoning is that red is the colour of vitality and protection in Chinese folk thought. It is harmless, cheap and pleasant, and it works as a daily reminder to stay mindful.

Be careful with big decisions. Marriages, major purchases, business launches and renovations are not forbidden. They simply deserve extra care, and for those born in the offending signs I like to choose dates through the Chinese almanac rather than by convenience alone.

Look after your health routine. An annual check-up is good sense in any year. In a Fan Tai Sui year the tradition simply gives you a reason to book it, along with rest and regular exercise. It is not a substitute for medical advice.

Attend joyous occasions. Many families say that attending weddings, baby full-month parties and other celebrations helps “balance” the sign’s tension with a more cheerful energy. Some also include other types of gatherings, so follow what your family does. The underlying idea is simple: be with people, bring good wishes and avoid isolation.

What Fan Tai Sui Does Not Mean

I want to be clear about a few things, because anxiety sells and I do not wish to add to it.

  • It does not mean you will have a bad year.
  • It does not mean everything in your life will stall until the Goat year ends.
  • It does not replace professional advice from a doctor, lawyer or financial adviser.
  • It does not outrank your own chart. A person born in an Ox year with strong support in their BaZi may have an easier year than a Pig with a stressed chart.

If you are anxious, the most useful steps are the ordinary ones: speak to people you trust, keep your finances sensible, and take a personal reading if you want specifics. A feng shui assessment of your home and a BaZi reading for 2027 together will tell you far more than a zodiac list.

Common Questions

Is 2027 a bad year for the Ox? I would not use the word bad. The Ox is the direct clash with the Goat and also part of the punishment trio, so the tradition advises more care. I ask Oxen to plan major decisions carefully, keep a steady routine and consider a temple visit in the first lunar month. Many Oxen have good years.

I am a Goat. Is my own sign year really lucky or unlucky? Neither on its own. The Goat year is 本命年 (běnmìngnián), a year the tradition treats with extra respect. Many families give Goats red items and encourage a thoughtful year of consolidation, since you return to your own sign only once every twelve years.

Can the Ox, Rat and Dog all do the same remedies? Broadly, yes. The red item, the temple visit and the careful planning apply to all four. The Ox deserves the most attention, and the Rat and Dog usually need only light precautions. A personal chart can refine this.

Do I need to do the ritual before CNY or after? Practice differs. Many families wait until after New Year and visit during the first lunar month, which runs from 6 February to 7 March 2027. Some temples choose their own dates, so check with your temple.

Does a Tai Sui plaque work? I treat it as a respectful gesture, not a guarantee. Many families find it comforting to have done something, and tradition values the act of showing respect. If it does not fit your beliefs, you can skip it without worry.

Key Takeaways

  • Fan Tai Sui 2027 involves four signs: the Goat (值太岁 sitting), the Ox (clash and punishment), the Rat (harm) and the Dog (punishment).
  • Tai Sui sits in the South-Southwest, Sui Po in the North-Northeast, and the Three Killings in the West. Be careful with heavy renovation in those sectors.
  • The Pig and Rabbit (Three Harmony) and the Horse (Six Combination) are the signs supported by the year.
  • Your sign depends on the calendar. The lunar year turns on 6 February 2027, while the BaZi year turns at Lichun on 4 February 2027 at 09:46 Malaysia time. Check your exact birth date.
  • Common measures are a temple visit in the first lunar month, a Tai Sui talisman, something red, careful planning and joyous occasions.
  • It is a traditional framework, not a prediction. A personal BaZi chart is far more precise than any zodiac list.
