Of all twelve animals in the Chinese zodiac, the Dog 狗 (gǒu) is perhaps the one most immediately understood across cultures. Loyalty, integrity, an unwavering sense of justice — these are the qualities that define the 戌 (xū) Earthly Branch, the eleventh position in the twelve-branch cycle. In my decades of practice as a classical feng shui and 八字 (bāzì) practitioner, I have found Dog-year people to be among the most principled I work with. They hold themselves to a high standard and hold others to one too — which can be both their greatest strength and, at times, their most persistent source of friction.
Which Years Are Dog Years?
The Dog occupies the eleventh position in the sexagenary 干支 (gānzhī) cycle. Dog years repeat every twelve years. The most recent Dog years are:
| Year | Heavenly Stem | Type | Dates (approx. Lìchūn boundary) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1946 | 丙 (bǐng) | Fire Dog | 4 Feb 1946 – 3 Feb 1947 |
| 1958 | 戊 (wù) | Earth Dog | 4 Feb 1958 – 3 Feb 1959 |
| 1970 | 庚 (gēng) | Metal Dog | 4 Feb 1970 – 3 Feb 1971 |
| 1982 | 壬 (rén) | Water Dog | 4 Feb 1982 – 3 Feb 1983 |
| 1994 | 甲 (jiǎ) | Wood Dog | 4 Feb 1994 – 3 Feb 1995 |
| 2006 | 丙 (bǐng) | Fire Dog | 4 Feb 2006 – 3 Feb 2007 |
| 2018 | 戊 (wù) | Earth Dog | 4 Feb 2018 – 3 Feb 2019 |
| 2030 | 庚 (gēng) | Metal Dog | 4 Feb 2030 – 3 Feb 2031 |
Important: If you were born in January or the first days of February in any of these years, check the precise 立春 (lìchūn) date. Those born before lìchūn in a Dog year belong to the preceding animal. A person born on 2 February 1982, for instance, falls just before lìchūn on 4 February — and therefore belongs to the Rooster year 1981 in classical BaZi reckoning.
The Dog’s Personality in Classical Chinese Astrology
The Earthly Branch 戌 belongs to the Earth element and is associated with the northwest direction, the hours of 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., and the late autumn season. Within it live the hidden stems of Xin Metal (辛), Ding Fire (丁), and Wu Earth (戊) — a complex inner composition that gives the Dog its characteristic tension between high principles and intense emotion.
Strengths
Dog-year people are defined by an almost unshakeable sense of loyalty. Once they commit — to a person, a cause, or a vocation — they do not abandon it lightly. They possess a natural moral compass that others often find reassuring; people trust them precisely because they sense that the Dog person will not compromise on what they believe to be right.
They are also quietly courageous. The Dog does not seek the spotlight the way the Dragon or Tiger might, but when a situation requires someone to stand up and be counted, the Dog steps forward without fanfare. They are industrious and methodical, preferring to build something solid over time rather than chase quick gains.
In interpersonal settings, Dog people are warm and devoted friends. They tend to maintain long, deep friendships rather than a wide social circle, and they take their responsibilities to those they love seriously.
Challenges
The same loyalty that makes the Dog admirable can shade into anxiety. Dog-year individuals are prone to worry — about the wellbeing of those they care for, about whether they are doing enough, about the state of the world. Left unchecked, this produces a pessimistic streak that can drain their considerable energy.
Their strong moral convictions can also tip into rigidity. The Dog who believes they are right can be very difficult to reason with, and they do not easily forgive those they feel have acted dishonourably. Learning to distinguish between non-negotiable principles and personal preferences is the central developmental challenge for many Dog-year people I have counselled.
The Five Types of Dog
Because the sixty-year 干支 cycle overlays five Heavenly Stems across each of the twelve animals, there are five distinct Dog types. Each inherits the Dog’s core character but expresses it differently:
| Type | Element | Key Qualities |
|---|---|---|
| Wood Dog (1934, 1994) | 甲/乙 Wood | Idealistic, creative, seeks harmony, more adaptable than other Dogs |
| Fire Dog (1946, 2006) | 丙/丁 Fire | Charismatic, driven, passionate, can be impulsive or overly intense |
| Earth Dog (1958, 2018) | 戊/己 Earth | Steady, responsible, conservative, the most practical of the five types |
| Metal Dog (1970, 2030) | 庚/辛 Metal | Resolute, principled, can be inflexible, excels in law, finance, and leadership |
| Water Dog (1922, 1982, 2042) | 壬/癸 Water | Perceptive, diplomatic, emotionally intelligent, drawn to people-centred work |
A Note on the Water Dog (壬戌)
The Water Dog — born in 1982 — carries the additional depth of 壬 (rén) Water over the Dog’s native Earth. This softens the Dog’s characteristic anxiety and adds a capacity for emotional nuance and strategic thinking that the other Dog types sometimes lack. Water Dogs tend to be excellent listeners and advisors. They read situations perceptively and adapt without losing their core values. In my experience, 1982 Dogs often end up in roles that require both trust and insight: counselling, medicine, teaching, and senior management where relationship-building is central to success.
Dog Fortune in 2026 — The Year of the Fire Horse
We are currently in 2026, the Year of the Fire Horse (丙午). For Dog-year people, this carries particular significance. The Horse (午) belongs to the same 三合 (sānhé) triad as the Tiger and the Dog — a Fire affinity triangle. When the year’s branch harmonises with your own, it activates supportive 氣 (qì) around you.
In practical terms, Dog natives tend to find 2026 a year of increased collaboration and social momentum. Career prospects are supported by helpful people — 貴人 (guìrén) — who open doors that would otherwise remain closed. Wealth prospects are moderate to good; the Fire energy favours action and visibility, so Dogs who are willing to step forward and be seen will fare better than those who remain in the background.
Health-wise, the prevailing Fire energy in a Horse year can tax the cardiovascular system and the emotional reserves. I advise Dog clients to manage stress carefully in 2026, maintain consistent sleep rhythms, and avoid overcommitting themselves socially even when the energy feels expansive.
The one caution: the Dog-Dragon clash (戌 and 辰 clash) does not activate in 2026 since this is a Horse year, which is a relief. Dogs enter 2026 without the heaviness that a Dragon year brings.
Compatibility with the Other 11 Signs
The Dog’s natural allies are the Tiger 虎 (hǔ) and the Horse 馬 (mǎ), completing the Fire Triad. These relationships tend to share energy, values, and direction. The Rabbit 兔 (tù) is also considered a highly compatible match for the Dog — the 六合 (liùhé, six harmonies) pairing of Rabbit and Dog creates a gentle, mutually supportive bond.
| Sign | Relationship with Dog |
|---|---|
| Tiger | 三合 (Fire Triad) — strong alliance |
| Horse | 三合 (Fire Triad) — strong alliance |
| Rabbit | 六合 (Six Harmonies) — harmonious bond |
| Pig | Generally amicable, supportive |
| Monkey | Neutral to mild tension |
| Rat | Neutral |
| Ox | Mild friction |
| Snake | Moderate tension |
| Goat | Neutral |
| Rooster | Some friction (yin/yang imbalance in Earth element) |
| Dragon | 相冲 (Clash) — the Dog’s primary challenge sign |
| Dog | Parallel — shared values but can amplify anxieties |
The Dragon-Dog clash is the most important dynamic to understand. The Dragon (辰) and Dog (戌) sit directly opposite each other in the twelve-branch cycle, producing a 相冲 (xiāngchōng) — a direct confrontation of energies. This does not mean that a Dog and Dragon cannot build a successful relationship; it means that extra conscious effort is required, and that in Dragon years the Dog native tends to feel more friction and resistance in life generally.
As with all compatibility assessments based on zodiac signs alone, I caution against over-interpreting these pairings. They describe tendencies, not destinies. A full BaZi comparison of the complete four-pillar charts of both individuals will always give a far more nuanced and accurate picture. If you are navigating an important relationship — romantic, business, or familial — with a Dragon-year person, it is worth booking a consultation before drawing conclusions.
Lucky Elements, Numbers, and Directions for the Dog
| Category | Lucky | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Colours | Green, red, purple | Blue, white |
| Numbers | 3, 4, 9 | 1, 6, 7 |
| Directions | South, east, northeast | Northwest |
| Gemstone | Diamond, ruby | — |
| Season | Summer, spring | Autumn |
The Dog’s native Earth element means it is grounded and stabilised by Wood (which controls Earth in the generating cycle’s reverse — the controlling cycle). Green and woody colours, east-facing spaces, and Wood-element activations in the home or office tend to benefit Dog natives when their charts suggest Wood support is needed. Always verify this against your personal BaZi chart; blanket “lucky colours” advice rarely survives contact with an individual’s specific elemental balance.

- Steven Spielberg (Fire Dog, 1946) — decades of committed, principled craft in his field
- Michael Jackson (Earth Dog, 1958) — extraordinary dedication and complexity, as characteristic of the Earth Dog’s intensity
- Prince William (Water Dog, 1982) — the Water Dog’s emotional intelligence and sense of duty in a very public role
- Justin Bieber (Wood Dog, 1994) — the Wood Dog’s idealism and creative drive
