Every year, the energy of a home or office shifts. Furniture that was ideally placed in 2025 may now sit on a newly activated affliction. Sectors that were neutral can become potent — either as sources of prosperity and health, or as pockets of disruption that demand careful handling. As a classical feng shui practitioner 風水師 (fēngshuǐ shī) with decades of experience working with Malaysian households and businesses, the annual audit is among the most practical services I offer — and I encourage every household to understand the energetic landscape of the year before making changes to their space.
2026 is 丙午年 (Bǐng Wǔ Nián) — the Year of the Fire Horse. It arrives within the broader context of Period 9 (九運, Jiǔ Yùn), which commenced in February 2024 and will run until 2043. This combination of a Fire-dominant year within a Fire-dominant period creates a particularly intense energetic environment — one that rewards swift, decisive action but punishes recklessness in equal measure.
The Energetic Context: Period 9 and the Fire Horse Year
Period 9 is governed by the trigram 離 (Lí) — Fire, the illuminating principle, associated with the South direction, visibility, fame, and the middle daughter. Its qi 氣 (qì) is expansive and outward-facing. I wrote in depth about this transition in my Period 9 Flying Stars guide.
The annual energy of 2026 deepens this Fire emphasis through the 丙午 (Bǐng Wǔ) pillar. The Heavenly Stem 丙 is Yang Fire at its most direct — the open sun. The Earthly Branch 午 is also a Fire branch at its core. In classical metaphysical terms, this is a year of extreme yang activity: bold initiatives, rapid change, and public exposure are all amplified. Those who are prepared to move will find the current accelerating behind them; those who hesitate may find it moves through them instead.
For a detailed portrait of the 丙午 sign and the personalities born under it, see my Fire Horse Chinese Zodiac guide.
The Annual Flying Stars for 2026
Classical Flying Star feng shui 玄空飛星 (Xuánkōng fēixīng) tracks nine stars (九星, jiǔxīng) as they rotate through the nine palaces of the Lo Shu square (洛書, Luòshū) each year. The annual centre palace in 2026 is governed by Star 8 (左輔星, Zuǒ Fǔ Xīng) — historically a prosperity star and the reigning star of the previous period (2004–2023). In Period 9 its vigour is somewhat diminished, but it remains a generally stable and benign influence at the heart of the chart.
The full annual distribution for 2026:
| Direction | Annual Star | Nature | Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Centre | 8 左輔 | Stable, benign | General wellbeing |
| Northwest | 9 右弼 | Highly auspicious | Activate |
| North | 4 文曲 | Romance, academic success | Activate for scholars |
| West | 1 貪狼 | Career, water prosperity | Activate for career growth |
| East | 6 武曲 | Authority, leadership | Activate for positions of influence |
| South | 3 祿存 | Arguments, legal disputes | Reduce activity and noise |
| Northeast | 2 巨門 | Illness | Minimise activity, especially for elderly |
| Southeast | 7 破軍 | Disputes, risk of loss | Guard carefully |
| Southwest | 5 廉貞 | Five Yellow — most dangerous | No renovation or disturbance |
Stars to Activate
The standout auspicious sector in 2026 is the Northwest, where Star 9 — the prosperous reigning star of Period 9 — resides. Placing regular human activity, natural light, or gentle movement (a ceiling fan, a water feature, or simply the most-used room in the house) in the Northwest this year can support wealth accumulation and opportunities for recognition and advancement.
The North (Star 4, Wen Qu 文曲) is favourable for students, writers, and anyone seeking romantic connection. The West (Star 1, Tan Lang 貪狼) supports career development and business transactions. The East (Star 6, Wu Qu 武曲) benefits those in leadership roles or seeking to establish authority.
Stars to Protect Against
The Southwest bears the Five Yellow (五黃, Wǔ Huáng) in 2026 — the most feared of the annual afflictions. This star carries the energy of misfortune, obstruction, and physical harm. The rule is absolute: no drilling, no renovation, no construction in the Southwest sector of your property this year. If your front door, master bedroom, or kitchen falls in the Southwest, discuss remedies with a qualified practitioner. Metal cures are traditionally employed to suppress the Five Yellow’s Earth energy.
The Northeast carries Star 2 (Ju Men 巨門, Jù Mén), the illness star. This is particularly concerning for households with elderly residents, young children, or anyone managing ongoing health conditions. Avoid making this sector the most-trafficked area of the home, and consider Metal elemental cures — a brass or stainless steel object — to suppress its Earth energy.
The Southeast holds Star 7 (Po Jun 破軍, Pò Jūn), associated with disputes and the risk of financial loss. Keep this sector calm and unactivated. I also advise a degree of caution with contracts, partnerships, and negotiations that originate from the Southeast orientation in 2026.

Tai Sui 太歲: The Grand Duke in 2026
In a Horse year (午), the Grand Duke Jupiter (太歲, Tài Suì) occupies the South (午方). Classical protocol has two primary applications. First, do not face the South when conducting important negotiations, signing contracts, or making significant decisions — this places you in direct opposition to the Grand Duke, which invites resistance. Second, the Sui Po (歲破, Suì Pò) — the “Year Breaker” — sits in the North (子方), directly opposite. Both the South and North sectors benefit from peace and minimal disturbance this year.
The Grand Duke is not inherently malevolent; it is a year’s presiding authority, and when it is respected rather than confronted, its energy can actually lend momentum to projects that align with its direction. For the full treatment of this year’s Tai Sui placement, see my article on Tai Sui 2026.
The Three Killings: Sān Shā 三煞
In a Horse year, the Three Killings (三煞, Sān Shā) occupy the North sector. This affliction encompasses the North and its adjacent sub-sectors. The traditional guidance is clear: do not undertake any ground-breaking, structural work, or significant disturbance in the North sector of your property in 2026. Facing North for important activities in a Horse year is also best avoided. Unlike the Tai Sui, the Three Killings does not allow for exceptions based on intention — it is a sector to leave undisturbed.
Element Energies for 2026
Given the double-Fire character of 丙午, the Five-Element productive cycle (五行生剋, wǔxíng shēng kè) offers useful guidance for décor, colours, and lifestyle choices:
- Wood (木, mù) feeds Fire and supports growth, creativity, and expansion. Green plants, wooden furniture, and upward-growing forms are all supportive in 2026.
- Fire itself (火, huǒ) — reds, oranges, bright lighting — amplifies visibility, recognition, and public profile. Use intentionally; Fire excess in sleeping areas or the Southwest will aggravate existing afflictions.
- Earth (土, tǔ) is what Fire produces and brings the year’s energy to ground. Earthy tones, ceramic accents, and low horizontal surfaces help translate inspiration into tangible results.
- Metal and Water — which control and cool Fire respectively — are often exactly what is needed for individuals whose BaZi charts are already heavily Fire-dominated.
For colour-specific guidance mapped to the year’s elemental profile, see the 2026 Lucky Colour guide.
Practical Steps Before You Begin
Before activating or suppressing any sector, I recommend this sequence:
- Establish the precise compass facing direction of your main entrance using a reliable compass (not a phone compass near metal appliances).
- Divide your floor plan into nine equal palaces and overlay the 2026 annual flying star chart above.
- Identify which stars affect your bedroom, kitchen, main entrance, and home office.
- Check whether these overlap with the Tai Sui zone (South) or Three Killings zone (North).
- Prioritise protecting the Southwest (Star 5) and Northeast (Star 2), and activating the Northwest (Star 9).
Every property also carries a natal feng shui chart shaped by its facing direction and the period in which it was built. The annual layer provides important guidance, but it sits on top of the property’s permanent chart — and a thorough analysis must account for both. A sector that shows Star 9 annually may be undermined by an unfavourable natal combination in the same palace, or conversely, an annual affliction may be significantly softened by a favourable permanent chart.
If you would like me to assess your home or office for 2026 — accounting for both the annual flying stars and your property’s natal chart — I invite you to book a feng shui consultation. You are also welcome to read the full Feng Shui guide for an introduction to classical principles before your session.
